What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are “caps” that deliver effective protection to damaged or decayed teeth. They’re fabricated using various materials, such as Emax, zirconia, and gold. Making it possible to strengthen vulnerable teeth over time, they are commonly recommended in the following situations:
- You recently received a root canal or dental implant and need an appropriate restoration to sit on top
- You have a severely decayed tooth that cannot be treated with just a filling
- You’ve sustained significant facial trauma, resulting in a tooth breaking
- As part of a dental bridge to replace multiple missing teeth
The Dental Crown Process

You can expect the dental crown process to require at least two visits to our dental office. During the first appointment, one of our dentists in Charlotte will determine if a dental crown is the correct course of action. If so, they will begin to remove clearing out the tooth of any decayed or damaged portions before filling it to ensure a tight seal.
Our team will then begin to alter the tooth (or shave it down) so that the future crown will sit comfortably on top of the vulnerable area.
After making an impression of your smile, we will fit you with a temporary crown that you’ll wear between your appointments. This will give your tooth greater protection during this time.
The impression is sent to a local laboratory so that technicians can begin to create the customized crown, which will be placed during a second appointment after the temporary is removed.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

You can expect to enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile once you have one or more dental crowns put in place. Some of the most enjoyable benefits you can prepare for include:
- Optimal protection against future reinfection and damage because of the durability these materials (Emax, zirconia, and gold) provide.
- Enhanced chewing power so that you can eat comfortably and avoid accidentally damaging your artificial tooth.
- A more confident, beautiful smile that radiates when around others.
- A restoration that can last 15+ years as long as you take care of it properly.
