What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Generally speaking, fillings are made from malleable materials and are used to patch up areas of decay. For a long time this was done with metal amalgam; however, modern fillings use composite resin, a putty-like material constructed from plastic. These contain no toxic metals, making them safer than older fillings, and can be matched to the color of the tooth for superior aesthetics.

Fillings are the easiest way to deal with small areas of decay, though in the case of serious damage to the tooth, more involved restorations may be necessary.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

In most cases, a single filling can be completed over the course of a single appointment taking less than an hour. The first step in the process will involve numbing your mouth, ensuring that the entirety of the process will be as comfortable as possible for you. We can also administer sedation if you’re nervous, though the procedure usually isn’t long or intensive enough to warrant that.

Once you’re comfortable we’ll begin removing the decayed sections of your enamel, sanitizing the tooth completely to prepare the tooth for repairs. We’ll then apply the resin in layers, applying one after another until the tooth is “filled” completely. This resin is hardened into place with a specialized curing light, after which we’ll carefully remove any excess putty and polish your tooth.

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

It might surprise you to learn that metal fillings are no longer in vogue, but that’s because their tooth-colored counterparts outshine them in several ways. They obviously look better—the filling will blend in with the tooth, making it hard to tell that you’ve had any dental work done. They are also free of toxic metals, which is something that cannot be said for many amalgam fillings.

Composite resin also bonds more easily to the tooth than metal does, allowing for a more stable attachment. It also means that we’ll have to remove less of your enamel in order to put the filling in place.

On top of all this, tooth-colored fillings can be applied incredibly quickly and will last for years before needing to be replaced. If you’re dealing with tooth decay, make an appointment and we’ll show you firsthand what this treatment can do for you!
